Sustainability
The environmental problems facing mankind has today moved to center stage. The awareness of the importance of keeping the environment clean and healthy, of not threatening the survival of habitats and species in order to satisfy the needs and “wants” of the present generation, has soared in recent years. Everyone’s involvement to save the environment is, therefore, essential.
It was however, the Founder of Scouts, Lord Robert Baden-Powell who was ahead of his time when he recognised the importance of teaching sound environmental stewardship in the early 1920s.
All the writings of Baden-Powell are permeated with a profound love of nature and respect for all-natural phenomena. One of the most recurrent themes in his books is the systematic emphasis laid on the importance of observing the wonderful processes of nature, understanding and protecting it, as part of the basic education of the boy. Considering that he was writing over 70 years ago, his views on the subject are extraordinarily prophetic.
The B-P Camp committee recognised the need for a sustainability plan – “a sustainability plan should be an evolving document that assesses and provides recommendations to meet the natural and financial resource needs and objectives of B-P Camp.”
